Millions of dollars and hundred of lives are lost every year in the Unted States because of mattress fires. One of the most dangerous sources for home fires is the common mattress. Older mattresses, and in particular mattresess made before 2007, are highly-combustible. The average consumer only replaces a mattress every ten years meaning there are many pre-fire retardant mattress in use. Pre-2007 mattresses burn faster and at a higher temperature than newer mattresses. Newer mattresses are required to have fire retardant barriers built into the construction as a means of reducing the risk of mattress fires.
Older mattresses do not have this built-in fire retardant barrier. There are only three ways a consumer can get this level of fire protection in their mattress. The customer can treat the mattress with potentially unhealthy chemicals as one solution. Or, the customer can buy an expensive new mattress. However, now the customer has a third, less-expensive and healthier option. Four Seasons Stitching is offering their line of commercial-grade fire retardant barriers to the public. The same fire retardant barriers used in new mattress constuction can now be purchase direct-from-the-manufacturer and used on your home mattress.
Currently, Four Seasons Stitching has two inexpensive fire retardant mattress cover choices to increase the fire retardancy of these pre-2007 mattresses. The first option is our Open-Width Fire Retardant Mattress Cover designed for home application. The product is designed to be oversized and to slide, easily over all existing mattresses. The Open Width verison is perfect for home use with "pillow top" and other oversized mattresses. The consumer-grade fire-retardant barrier is shown, in the slideshow below, provided by one of our customers.
The second option is the Four Seasons Stiching Fitted Fire Retardant Mattress Cover. The Fitted Fire Retardant Barrier has the same oversized design and perfromance of the Open Width Fire Retadant Barrier. However, the Fitted Fire Retardant Barrier has a more tailored design and is "locked" in place with a zipper.
